AUTHOR'S PREFACE

The author of "Evolution, Science and the Bible," is not a scientist. The reason for the appearance of the present work is that something which passes current for science has overstepped its bounds and challenged a cause for which he lives.

He believes the Bible to be a divinely inspired revelation from God to man, in which is revealed man's origin, present state and future destiny.

That revelation, particularly concerning man's origin, has been called in question and denied by evolution.

Believing evolution to be nothing but a false science, he has penned the following pages to expose evolution: in order that thinking people who have become enamoured with it may be induced to-think again.

He also has another object in view. The teaching of evolution in schools is doing a deadly work. Unsuspected by the parents, children are being insidiously poisoned by this noxious philosophy.

Often 'they do not confide the doubts and fears which their biology lessons arouse. This arises through a natural reticence or a fear of sounding unbelieving, or even doubtful, to God-fearing and Bible-loving fathers and mothers.

Thus the evil seeds planted by biology begin to germinate under favourable conditions. Later-often when it is too late-they produce their evil crop of unbelief.

Again, even when a childish confession presents an opportunity to combat the evil, the parents find themselves at a disadvantage through lack of acquaintance with the facts. Consequently, their efforts show up badly compared with the child's respected teacher of biology. Such un successful efforts may well do more harm than none at all, for they may but serve to increase the doubts in the child's mind. This is no imaginary danger, as we happen to know from experience.

We are convinced that this doctrine of organic evolution, which is now so much taken for granted in the schools, is a barefaced imposture with not a shred of scientific evidence to support it. On the contrary, everything that can be called science opposes and contradicts it. All we ask is a careful reading of the evidence upon which we make this serious charge.

The following chapters are written by a layman, principally for laymen. Should a technical reader chance upon these pages he may find their simplicity rather insipid. He may even find his sensitive scientific susceptibilities offended by our crude definitions and explanations. Such instances we hope will at least be few-and we certainly know that they will be unimportant.

Be this as it may, all we ask is that such incidental detail will not be allowed to blind him or her to the cogency of the main arguments which, we feel sure, cannot be invalidated by any amount of technical objections. Indeed, quibbling about trifles is usually a sign that the opposing case is a strong one. This every student of human nature knows. It manifests itself wherever controversy is found, whether on the debating platform, or in a court of law. Often it is a sign that something more than susceptibility has been hurt.

We have made use of capital letters and italics in many of the quotations in order to emphasise certain points. We mention this fact here that it may serve as an acknowledgment in every case, thus obviating the necessity for the recurring "capitals ours," "italics ours," etc.: which can be distracting.

We have aimed at being as untechnical as the nature of the subject will allow, and at presenting the facts in an interesting way in order to relieve the heaviness usually associated with scientific matters.

We have made free use of scientific testimony in order to arrest the attention-and we hope arouse the interest of those who, at first, would not be disposed to listen to anything concerning the Bible.

Reasoning out of the Scriptures is more to our taste: but the present subject calls for a somewhat different treatment. Therefore, upon the principle of being "made all things to all men that I might by all means save some," we freely resort to scientific help. Not that the Bible side of things is left out, as the reader will see.

Thus it is hoped that this work will supply a long felt need and that it may help some to repudiate a God dishonouring philosophy and at last find "the pearl of great price."

As to simple believers they will find much herein to aid them in contending for "the faith once for all delivered to the saints. Much also to encourage them when they realise that what once seemed a fearsome foe is, after all, only a bogey. We do not need to apologise for the Bible. In our acceptance of it, as God's inspired and infallible word, we stand on a rock that nought can move.

In conclusion, we pray for God's blessing on this effort undertaken in His Great Name. For we realise that,

"Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it."

HENRY W. HATHAWAY.

PUBLISHERS' NOTE

A third edition of this valuable work is published in response to numerous requests, and in the knowledge that it has helped many to see the folly of human speculation, and to regain faith in the Word of God.

Although no material alterations have been made to the substance of the matter presented, the opportunity has been taken of making a number of textual corrections, and of incorporating, as an appendix to Chapter 1, extracts from the statement recently published by the British Museum on the Piltdown Skull.

It is the earnest hope of the publishers that this edition may continue the good work of turning men from fables to the living and true God.
