Hieronim Moskorzowski 1560-1629

Moskorzowski's "noble birth, his great wealth, his broad learning and his zeal for religion'' were put to great use on behalf of the Brethren for more than thirty years.287 Baptized in 1595, he founded the ecclesia in Czarkow, one of the largest in Poland. Tutor to Johann Krell at Rakow college, he was called "the Polish Eusebius''. Widely read, his literary style was lucid and he translated Polish works of the Brethren into Latin, including a popular catechism. His aristocratic connections enabled him to offer protection to poorer brethren under persecution, and he constantly tried to present to the authorities the Brethren's law-abiding character. He is reported to have said: "Our hope collapses if it is not believed that Christ was a man, that he proclaimed the way of eternal life for me, was resurrected, exalted and attained to the divine glory, which things can be the cause of my faith.'' 200
